When it comes to stories of a supernatural persuasion the enigmatic region of Transylvania in Romania is most commonly associated with vampires, yet the Hoia Baciu forest situated outside the city of Cluj Napoca is perhaps even more notorious for its reputation as the world's most haunted forest. For years this area of woodland has been home to so many tales of the unexplained that it has become unofficially known as the "Bermuda Triangle of Transylvania."
It's appearance is that of a forest from a fairy tale with menacing, twisted and misshapen trees. Visitors commonly report a great deal of anxiety upon entering the woods and many have returned with strange symptoms including rashes, scratches, burns, headaches and even missing time. Stories have emerged of disembodied voices and sightings of apparitions.
Some believe that the forest is haunted by the trapped spirits of murdered villagers who are unable to move on. The forest itself is even believed to be named after a local shepherd who was said to have disappeared there without a trace along with all 200 of his sheep.
Despite numerous studies however no explanation for these phenomena has ever been found.
