Lykoi 'werewolf' cats are latest pet craze

An unusual breed of cat that resembles a wolf and acts like a dog has been gaining in popularity. With hair missing from around the eyes, nose, ears and mouth the unusual breed not only behaves like a dog but also looks a little like one, with some owners likening the animals to the X-Men comic character Wolverine.

The name 'Lykoi' is based on the Greek word for 'wolf' and the breed is a natural mutation from a domestic shorthair cat. With interest in the animals increasing and with there being only seven known breeders of the cats anywhere in the world, demand by pet owners is set to soon outstrip supply.

Tennessee breeders Johnny Gobble and his wife Brittney have been breeding the cats since 2010 and are well up to speed on the quirks and behaviors that the Lykai exhibit. "They like to hunt around the house for whatever they can find," said Gobble. "They show caution to strangers, but warm up quickly and become very friendly."
