Should we be signalling to ET ?

A continuous message beacon aimed at contacting aliens is being hailed and criticized in equal measure. Dr. Jacob Haqq-Misra and a group of entrepreneurs are planning to use the Jamesburg Earth Station radio dish in Carmel to send out a continuous message to any extraterrestrials that might be listening. The signal will be initially focused on the Gliese 526 star system which has been identified as potentially habitable. Criticism has been leveled at the project however because the group aim to charge people to send their own messages using the system.
There is also concern over whether it is wise to be sending out messages aimed solely at attracting attention to the Earth given that there is no guarantee that any given extraterrestrial civilization would be friendly. A group of scientists and entrepreneurs has created the world’s first continuous message beacon to communicate with extraterrestrial civilizations. And for a fee, people can use it to transmit their own messages into space. But not everyone thinks this project is a good idea.
