Controversy has surrounded an official warning to tourists over the safety of visiting Giza in Egypt. Earlier this week the US embassy put out a warning to tourists asking them to "elevate their situational awareness" when paying a visit to Egypt's pyramids. According to officials, there were concerns over the safety of visitors due to a "lack of visible security or police". Of particular concern were incidents in which angry groups of individuals were said to have surrounded visitors in their cars and tried to gain access.
Egypt's Antiquities' Ministry however has played down these concerns and criticized the embassy over the warnings, instead insisting that the claims were "baseless" and that the area of Giza is in fact a perfectly safe and secure place to visit. Egypt's Antiquities' Ministry has criticized a U. S. Embassy message to American citizens in the country, urging them to be extra cautious because of recent incidents near the pyramids in Giza.
