Snow and gales are expected to cause chaos across Britain as another cold front blows in from Greenland.
The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for the whole of the UK on Tuesday, with snow or rain and strong winds in most areas. The worst weather is expected down the west of Scotland and across the Pennines and north Midlands. A couple of inches of snow is expected in Northern Ireland, Scotland and northern England as far down as the Midlands. On the high ground conditions will be “atrocious” with up to five inches of snow and drifts building up to over a foot. Further south snow is expected in the early hours but will be relatively light and is likely to turn into sleet and squally showers. It will also be windy across the country, with gale force winds up to 60mph in the north and on higher ground and giant waves around the coast.Dan Williams of the Met Office said the worst of the disruption is likely to be on Tuesday morning. He said cities in the north like Leeds, Bradford and Sheffield will be hit at rush hour. He said: “We have a severe weather alert out for Tuesday. “No one should be surprised if they see some snow - that includes right down to south. But we don’t expect any build-up in the south, just flurries.
“We could see some places further north getting 10 to 15cm (5 inches) that could build up over night so there is potential for disruption tomorrow. The worst hit areas are over 100m up and we will get drifting of snow with high winds.” Temperatures will be freezing overnight and reach only 5C during the day. On Wednesday the wet and windy weather will continue, with snow showers down the east of the country as far south as East Anglia. On Thursday there will be a brief respite of drier sunny weather before another band of light snow and rain shower on Friday. Mr Williams said it remained unclear whether a cold front will come in from the east bringing calmer conditions over the weekend or whether the wet, windy weather will continue. “There is a lot to play for in the weather at the weekend,” he said.
