Superbugs pose "apocalyptic threat"

Fresh concerns have been raised over the potential consequences of antibiotic resistant bacteria. An increase in the number of cases involving superbugs has lead to dire warnings from some prominent figures in the health sector including Britain's chief medical officer who has warned of a potentially apocalyptic scenario in which patients could die from routine operations because of bacteria resistant to all known types of antibiotics.
In a statement to Parliament this week Dame Sally Davies warned that such an eventuality should be considered a national emergency alongside the likes of terrorist attacks and natural disasters. "There are few public health issues of potentially greater importance for society than antibiotic resistance," she said. "We need to get our act together in this country." A prominent British health official has declared the rise of antibiotic-resistant superbugs so grave a threat that the world is now facing an "apocalyptic scenario" in which people die of routine infections.
