SMALL TSUNAMI FOLLOWS 7.5 ALASKAN EARTHQUAKE

A magnitude 7.5 earthquake off the coast of Alaska generated a tsunami warning at midnight this morning, now canceled, of significant expected widespread inundation and dangerous coastal flooding. By 1:17 a.m. local time that warning was canceled. Water level reached a half a foot above tide level at Port Alexander and 0.3 feet at Sitka, Ak.The 7.5 magnitude earthquake occurred 6 miles deep along a strike-slip fault between the Pacific plate and the
North American plate which are slipping past each other at about a rate of 2 inches a year. The USGS reported that the earthquake was "likely associated with relative motion across the Queen Charlotte fault system offshore of British Columbia, Canada."
